Nintendo World Championships

The big day arrived at the Best Buy in Torrance CA. Here i am at 11:30 AM waiting in line to give it my all and enter the Nintendo World qualifiers. Among me were various gamers from all over southern California some coming from even Las Vegas. As we waited hoping the hot sun would not melt us before we got inside we talked about various things. From EVO to the crazy price of earthbound on the super Nintendo.

The event was very lack luster no banners or posters on the outside and no one to hype up the line. Once inside there was a bit more decor but still very bland from the masters of Nintendo. As it was my time to play i noticed the gaming area was just a long table and not a cool kiosk or a chair set up for us to play at. The event lasts 6 minutes and the players got to compete with the NES Remix on the 3DS. The challenge consisted of collecting 50 coins in super Mario 25 coins in Mario 3 and the rest of your time playing DR Mario. Then the officials took your registration card wrote your score down and let you get some Nintendo swag sticker sheets.

After a 20 year gap I can understand the event didn’t look as nice as I imagined. The event was only limited to 750 people to compete when I was in line I was around the 300 wristband mask. The fun bit was meeting new people and talking about how they grew up with Nintendo so many shared memories and stories this is why I like the video game community. If there is the world championships next year Nintendo really needs to add some of that hype and really get a crowd in we shall see who wins and gets their shot to go to E3 to crown the king of games! No power gloves and no “it’s so bad” lines were used in the making of this post!
